Who’da Thought?

I came home last night after an Uppercase Living party and Dan announced to me that Jack and Maria were sleeping in the same bed.

Say WHAT?!?

Never. Never in a MILLION YEARS would I believe that those two would be asleep in the same bed, much less in the same room.

We were living with my in-laws when Luke’s arrival was imminent and I realized I was going to have to combine children and put Jack and Maria (14 mos. apart) in the same room. I knew it might be kind of crazy at first, but I figured that things would settle down after a few nights.

WRONG.

Jack and Maria went crazy. They were silly, loud and basically obnoxious. Jack would climb into Maria’s crib and it was an all-out party. Dan and I took turns going into their room to tell them to quiet down, to yell at them to be quiet and to scream at them to SHUT UP. All to no avail.

dsc_0068.jpgWe did some breathing exercises and told each other, “We can wait them out. It’s not a big deal. They’ll fall asleep eventually.” What lies we told each other! After several hours, it was evident that they were NEVER going to go to sleep. We took turns sitting in the room, trying to nip trouble in the bud. It was no use. They just kept on keepin’ on.

Well. Dan and I did not give up! We had to make this work! A baby was coming!

Night after night we tried to make it work. Night after night, Jack and Maria partied until the wee morning hours. We were determined. They were more determined.

Finally, shamefully, we gave in. We separated them once again and simply moved Maria each night into Jack’s room after they were both asleep. We did this for months. It was painful, but not as painful as trying to put them down together.

Now, whenever another mom tells me they’re moving one child in with another child, I tell her, “Good luck!”

So… I was absolutely DUMBFOUNDED when Dan told me these kids of mine were sleeping together. In the same room. In the same bed. I still can’t get over it. Of course, you, like me, might be wondering why in the HECK Dan ever even went with the idea. Be sure to let me know when you figure it out.

Maybe they just collapsed form the exhaustion of bouncing off of the walls, or he used an extra dose of “cough medicine”.

    Very likely :-)

We just went through this with the boys. Brian lasted one week in John’s room. Going to bed was a pain. We gave Brian a couple of tries of staying in the big bed and then we put him in the crib in the room. They eventually both went to sleep.

It was the waking up at 4:45 every morning and decided that it was time to play that killed room sharing for me. I cannot get up that early in the morning.

I’m hoping for a better result in a year or so. In the mean time, Chris is losing his office at night.

Did you find an empty Nyquil bottle somewhere?

Ha, ha! If I thought that would work, I’d be buying it by the gallon at Sam’s :-)
