We’re Alive

February 6th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Dads, Family, Parenting

We made it through the storms last night and early this morning. In case you don’t know what I’m referring to, we had some nasty thunderstorms, high winds and tornadoes ripping through Tennessee over the last 24 hours.

When did the first set of sirens sound? That would be just after all four of my children fell asleep in their beds. Dan was at the store and I watched the news closely. I flipped channels desperately looking for a second opinion, but all the weather people told me to get in a safe place. Right. Now.

Crap.

I put pillows and covers in Dan’s closet and woke the children one by one so we could all go hide out. I was hoping maybe everyone would go back to sleep, but no luck there. Sam wanted the sweet spot - smack on top, right in the middle of all the warm bodies. Maria continually complained that Jack was getting too big for the closet - his feet were in her face. And Luke was worried about Daddy. “What if his car breaks in two?” he asked.

Need I mention that I couldn’t even fit in the closet? I had to make due with sitting in the doorway. Cheerio sat next to me, keeping watch.

After what seemed like hours, but was really just 20 minutes, we decamped from the closet and I got down to the job of putting everyone back down for bed.

Luke: “But I’m scared.”
Me: “It’s okay. God will protect you.”
Luke: “But God’s not here!!!!!!”
Me: “Yes, he is.”
Luke: “Noooooo. God is at church.”

He always makes me smile :-)
