I’m not one to start decorating for Christmas the day after Halloween. And, I really don’t decorate all that much anyway. However, I do look forward to getting my wreath out each year. As soon as I think about it, I get it out and hang it. Then I keep it up for as long as I think I can get away with.
The wreath is unique and it was made by my Grandmother. When she passed away, I asked my parents if I could have it.
Growing up we spent our Thanksgivings at Grandmother’s house and I always remember seeing the wreath on her front door as we walked in and received our hugs and kisses. It will always remind me of her.
She made the wreath from tin can lids. Can you believe that? She collected the lids, then assembled and cut them, added some frills and somehow they became flowers. She attached them to a straw wreath base and then added a few holly berries. I have no idea when she made it, but it was on her door for the holidays as far back as I can remember.
Last year I noticed that the straw base of the wreath had begun to sag. The wreath was no longer a circle, but an oval. I thought I might try to find a way to bind it up, but in the end I decided to redo the wreath.
This evening, I dug up a box my dad had sent me that contained some extra tin flowers and another wreath base, on which a few flowers had been attached (I guess at some point she was making another one). One by one I took the flowers off the old wreath and attached them to the new one. With Dan working and the kids in bed, I had plenty of quiet time to work on it and think about my Grandmother.
She was wonderful.
