The Joy of Books

Maria loves to read.  She is also very good at it.

And, despite most people being more afraid of public speaking than death, Maria likes prefers an audience.

So, when it’s time for her to do some reading (per her reading contract with her teacher), she will often ask me or her dad if she can read to us.  While we love to listen to her, it’s not always possible.  At the same time, the boys like to be read to before bed.  It’s not always possible to do that, either.  So, killing two birds with one stone (aka being a horrible parent), I told Maria the other night that Luke and Sam would LOVE it if she started reading to them before bed each night.  She seemed to think this was a good idea and was pretty excited about it.

When she came around yesterday looking for someone to read to, I reminded her that she should read to the boys.  Sam was off playing on his own, but Luke was hanging around.  At first, he acted macho-ly uninterested.  But Maria, as persuasive as ever, seem to get him pumped up about it.  Then she ran off to find a book.

And came back triumphantly holding… FANCY NANCY.

Needless to say, she ended up reading to herself.

Later, she came around again, this time with several books tucked under her arm.  I was sitting on the floor with Andrew and she asked if she could read to us.  I told her that I’d listen, but that I was going to be reading my email, too.  Andrew, I told her, would definitely enjoy it.

She chose Baby Grunt and the Giant Egg from her stack.

And, she decided to SING it.  All the way through.

Interesting.  Funny.  Slightly disturbing.
