So Big

Maybe it’s just time. Or, maybe it’s just that we’re all in such close quarters.

Sam thinks he’s a big boy now. He will not be left behind. He will not be left out. He can do what everyone else can do. He’s just as brave, just as fast, just as strong. (Or so he thinks.)

On Friday, we spent the morning at a picnic sponsored by Dan’s work. There was food, a bouncy hut, a magician and some special demonstrations. Sam had no problem keeping up.

The magician not only had a real dove, hamster and magic rabbit, but he was also very talented when it came to balloon creations.

We stood in line for what seemed like two hours and finally walked away with a balloon fishing pole (Luke), a sword (Jack), an Elmo (Maria) and a Snake (Sam).

Surprise, surprise, Sam’s snake ceased to exist 15 minutes later. Surprisingly, the others’ balloon creations lasted a little longer. One, I think, even made it until Saturday afternoon.

Back to Big Boy Status… in the past, we’ve only ever moved one of our children from a crib into a big-kid bed when the next child came along. (Jack was the exception – Maria came along so fast we had to get a second crib.) Unlike many children I know, none of my kids has ever climbed out of a crib, so there was no hurry. They’ve all been quite content to sleep in a crib until I was ready to move them – even if it meant they were almost 3 years old and a little cramped.

Sam just had to be different. In the hotel, we’ve had him in a Pack ‘n Play, where he’s been fairly content. In the same room Jack, Maria and Sam have been crammed into a queen bed like sardines. Due to the sleeping arrangements we’ve had to stagger bedtimes. (If we put everyone to bed at once it’s just a big fiesta.)

It’s really worked pretty well until the last few days. Sam has suddenly deemed himself above the Pack ‘n Play and has taken to crawling into bed with Luke. Somewhat inconvenient, but sooooooo cute. I guess we’ll have to look into bunk beds sooner than we thought!
