For some reason (I personally believe it’s hereditary - on my husband’s side) the boys in this family are resistant to potty training when it comes to the number 2 thing.
Jack was so resistant and I was so persistent, it caused us both a lot of problems. Some painful, some disgusting. So, when Luke started approaching the potty training milestone, I promised everyone that would listen that I.Would.Not.Push. (Neither will he - except in a diaper.)
He has no trouble with peeing. That’s way too much fun - especially when his older brother shows him how faaaarrr you can make it go and what targets you can hit.
But the poop - no way. So far, he wears his undies most of the time and just asks for a diaper when he needs to poop. The past haunts me, so I’ve obliged him willingly. Dan, however, announced yesterday that Lukie is almost 3 years old! And he should be finishing up with the potty training! “You should have him go bottomless,” he told me.
“Fine,” I said. “Take off his pants - he’s doing the poop dance now anyway.”
So Luke ran around bottomless for a few minutes and when the moment was imminent, he asked for a diaper.
“No,” I told him. “Poop on the potty.” (Dan was conveniently outside by this time.)
“Noooooooooo!” He wails.
“Yes,” I say. “And don’t poop on my floor, either!”
He continued to dance in a panic and I tried to ignore him. Then, he disappeared for a while. Foolishly, I was hoping he’d ended up on the potty and would call me when he needed me.
After a few minutes I went in search of him and found him…
…in Jack’s room. With a diaper on. And poop in it.
In the throes of desperation, Luke had brought Jack a diaper and asked him to put it on him. Jack complied - and did a nice job of it.
“Six years ago we didn’t know how to change a diaper,” Dan said.
Yet, our 5-year-old did it like a pro. Of course, Jack is very sympathetic to Luke’s predicament. He knows what it’s like to have to find creative ways around potty training. After all, he once hid in his sister’s room and used one of her pull-ups (pink though it was) to do his business.
P.S. You may have noticed that I skipped over Maria’s potty training experience. That’s because compared to the boys, she really didn’t have any issues to speak of.
