Hot Diggity Dog

I am: The. Worst. Mom. EVER.

Why?

Because I sent my daughter off to school this morning facing a hotdog for lunch.  How could I?

The truth is, despite my dislike of making lunches (why is this such a dreadful task?), I would have made her a sandwich.  Even though it was a hot lunch day, which are few and far between at our school.  I certainly wouldn’t want to face the day with an icky (according to some) lunch ahead.

BUT.

She did not ask me to make her a sandwich.  She did not say ANYthing about hot lunch day.  As a matter of fact, since no one said anything, I thought I might have my dates wrong and had to double-check the calendar last night.  Definitely a hot lunch day.  No making lunches.  WHOOOHOOOOOO!

This morning at breakfast, Maria mentioned that it was a hot lunch day today.  That they were having hot dogs.  (This is Chicagoland, after all.  Land of the hot dog.)

That was it.  That was all she said about it.  Until we were walking out the door.  Then she said she wanted a sandwich to take.  That she HATES hot dogs.  That she TOLD ME YESTERDAY TO MAKE HER A SANDWICH.  Tears spouted from her eyes.  Her feet stomped the floor.  Wailing was heard… all the way down the street.

Good and loving mother that I am, I took a deep breath and ran off to make her a sandwich. Evil Mom reared her head, told Maria very definitively that she had NOT been reminded about hot lunch yesterday and was NOT asked to prepare a sandwich.  Sorry.  It’s time to go.  NOW.

All the way to school (thank goodness we’re talking 5 blocks) Maria wailed and cried and moaned.  Jack tried to placate.  I demanded silence.

Then, as all the kids hopped out of the van and walked toward the door, I felt a terrible guilt wash over me.  My poor baby girl.  Going to school with tears in her eyes and her worst nightmare – a HOT DOG – to look forward to for lunch.  Ugh.

I don’t consider your guilt valid–I feel you did the right thing.

And has she ever tried a hot dog? If not, has she ever read “Green Eggs and Ham”?
