Firetruck

Today is the big 3 for Lukie. When I went to get him this morning (yes, he still sleeps in a crib – are you crazy?!?) I asked him who was 3 today. “Me!!!” Was his joyful response.

“I’m so sad,” I told him. “Now I don’t have a 2-year-old anymore.”

“Don’t be sad,” he told me. “Lukie will stay 2.”

If only he was that sweet all the time… Seriously, though, he’s probably the sweetest in the bunch and the snuggler. Despite his occasional antics you can’t resist him. Right now he’s sitting over there kissing his new soccer ball because he’s so happy to have it. You should have seen him trying to open another present without putting it down. It was a gift from Dad.

dsc_0003.jpgThis year, my big boy had a dragon cake for his birthday. Despite my kitchen incompetence, I usually try to make a cool cake for the kids on their birthday (unless I’m in the hospital having another baby like on Maria’s 3rd birthday.)

Unfortunately, it doesn’t always turn out as hoped. Thankfully, though, the dragon looks like a dragon. When I asked Dan for his opinion last night he said, “It looks great!”

“Are you just saying that because you know I’ll kill you if you don’t?” I asked.

“No. It really looks great. And it’s a crap load better than that pink firetruck cake you made.”

Ahhhhhh. The Pink Firetruck Cake. Poor Lukie. Thankfully he was just turning 1 and didn’t know the difference.

Here’s the email I sent to one of my sisters about it that year:

The cake was just terrible. Caroline called in the middle of it all and thought I must have been crazy – I was laughing and crying at the same time. It was *supposed* to be a firetruck. The cake part was okay – I cut it all right and got it stacked right. But I didn’t have the right icing and decorations and it just turned out TERRIBLE.

As G’mom would have said, “Horrors!”

Dan walked in and said, “What’s that?!”

I asked Maria if she knew what it was and she said she didn’t know.

I asked Jack – he said it was a firetruck. Then he looked a little longer and said, “but, it’s funny.” I only think he said it was a firetruck because I had told him before that that’s what I was going to make.

It was pink, not red, and there was cake all in the frosting because it wouldn’t stick. I didn’t have the necessary gumdrops and oreos since I couldn’t get to the store because of being sick so I used m&ms which just looked stupid. And, it turned out that (according to Dan) it tasted like sh*t because he bought cheap mix instead of Duncan Heinz. (I didn’t eat any.)

At least the kids thought it tasted great, even if it did look funny.

Despite my vow to avoid recording the moment, I actually have a picture of The Firetruck Cake. I guess after all this time the pain has faded enough to post the picture. dscn2730.jpg

I can hear you laughing from here.

    Sarah,
THANK YOU! We should start a pink firetruck support group. Please, send the pics – I’ll post them here. I think you could use a gallon of red food coloring and still get nowhere near red.

Here you go. My pink firetruck I did have the benefit of licorice and oreos, but the red is still pink. I’ve given up and started buying the ready made red & black from Wilton.

Cool dragon! The firetruck reminds me of the schoolbus cake I made for Braden’s first birthday. Except for the fact that it turned out “so cute”, that my mom refused to cut and….no one would eat it, and I threw it in the garbage a week later. That was hard. Which is worse?!

There is NOTHING wrong with a pink firetruck when a mother slaves in the kitchen baking and then decorating said cake. At least you make your children’s birthday cakes. I make . . . a phone call!
