Easter Weekend

April 12th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Dads, Parenting

Well, it looks as though our Easter luck has continuted into this year.  It started a few years ago with this* and we really haven’t had the best of Easters since.

Yesterday morning, Luke woke up still feverish and so had to miss the Easter egg hunt in the park.  Which means, darn it, I had to stay home too.  While he laid pathetically in bed, I readied the house for egg dying upon everyone’s return.

The "Experienced" Egg Dyers

The egg dying went okay, as I covered the kitchen from top to bottom in newspaper before we began.  However, more dye ended up on the children’s hands than on the eggs.  For reasons unknown, they’re opposed to using the egg lowering tools provided in the kit.

dsc_0005I spent most of the afternoon running around like a chicken with its head cut off, gathering Easter basket supplies.  Because, you know, I like to plan ahead.  Only an idiot such as myself (and my older brother, apparently) are foolish enough to go to Wal-Mart on the Saturday before Easter.  Of course, I lost my list somewhere between Hobby Lobby and Wal-Mart, so I missed buying most of what I needed.  Including pecans.  For the Easter cookies.

Which we made late in the evening.  Which didn’t go all that well.  (I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to scream at your kids in between reading the Bible passages that go along with the cookie making.)

This morning, we had to attend mass in shifts, due to Lukie’s fever.  Dan and Jack went at 7 and then Maria and I went at 8:30.  After some serious arguments about her hair.  (I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to scream at your daughter first thing on Easter Sunday morning, either.)  Then again, said daughter had a serious attitude problem.  Where she gets this I have NO IDEA.  Oh, and she didn’t want to go to mass because SHE ALREADY KNOWS THE STORY!!!  She saw it in a movie at kindergarten.

We are all now running around like pinballs, riding out our sugar highs.  A fever does not keep a child from wanting to consume large amounts of candy – in case you were wondering.  (And, yes, despite my commitment to SBD, I had some jellybeans.  And a little chocolate.  And a few maltballs.  Which reminds me, I have a cake to bake.)

*Sorry, Kristina.  You knew I wouldn’t be able to resist.

Remember, I am the one who let Susan’s niece Lucie (Maria’s age) fall down the escalator… these things happen.
