Shuttering

June 9th, 2009 · 4 Comments · Family, Home

It was 9 p.m. last night before I put the last few tools away, but we did it!  We got ALL of the new shutters hung, and they look great!
Here’s a before pic:

And here (drumroll, please…) is an after picture:

Thank you to Steve, who is definitely more than an electrician and helped me make the [...]

Getting It Done

June 8th, 2009 · 7 Comments · Home, Parenting

I know I’ve been a little absent, but it’s for a very good reason!
We spent the weekend getting things done.  A LOT of things.
The first item on the list was finishing the second window box.  I finished painting and assembled it and then Dan helped me mount it to the house.  Yipee!  Only three more [...]

A Project

May 30th, 2009 · 4 Comments · Home, Projects

Finally, we finished our first window “box”!
I’ve been wanting window boxes for the front of the house, but have found that the ones wide enough for our windows are waaaayyyy out of our price range.  Coincidentally, as I was lamenting this, our March issue of The Family Handiman arrived.  And in it, a quick project [...]

Highway Robbery

March 20th, 2009 · 3 Comments · Home, Parenting

Oh, how I hate to pay for something unnecessarily.
Months ago, Dan bought us a new garage door opener.  It’s unlike the current opener in that a) it isn’t rusted and rickety; b) it has more than one remote; and c) it has safety sensors – you know, those things that are REQUIRED BY CODE so [...]

We’re Getting There

February 3rd, 2009 · 2 Comments · Home

So.  After a quick coat of primer the night before, and some painstaking trimming to make things level, we were ready to install the bathtub walls last night.  I wanted things to go smoothly and quickly, so I prepared while Dan was still at work.
I cut up the cardboard box that the walls came in [...]

…the newest HGTV show:  Dan and Susan’s Bathroom Remodeling Adventure
It’s coming along, although not as quickly as we’d hoped.  But what do you expect when you have to work around four little ones?  We do most of our work in the evenings after the kids are in bed (for obvious reasons). When you factor in [...]

Bathroom Remodel

January 26th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Home, Parenting, Projects

What originally had been a regrout project has turned into a partial bath remodel.  Now I wish we could just do the whole thing.
Here’s what we started with this weekend after trying to remove some grout:

And then we went to this:

to this:

to this:

and finally, to this:

While we’ll continue to do some things on our own, [...]

Weekend Roundup

January 12th, 2009 · 5 Comments · Adventures, Dads, Home, Moving, Parenting

This weekend was an unusually busy one.
We kicked things off with the whole, dog bloat-kid puking thing late Friday night.  That was fun!
On Saturday it snowed.  Again.  A lot.  A FOOT.  I had thought that we’d already seen as much at one time that we’d see.  Ha.  Oh, and we’re due more this afternoon.
Also on [...]

Decoration

December 24th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Family, Food, Holidays, Home

At the suggestion of my sister Caroline, yesterday the kids and I made chocolate-dipped pretzels.  I just happened to have the necessary supplies on hand, and after a long day inside we needed a boredom buster.

I melted the chocolate,  Jack did the dipping and Luke, Sam and Maria applied the nonpareils.
I wonder… what does the [...]

Susan, Master Electrician

November 25th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Home

Well, not really.  But I did replace all the electrical outlets and switches in our living room all by myself!  It’s probably giving my parents the willies reading that, but I managed it all without electricuting myself or any children.  The dog is still alive, too.  Oh, and the house hasn’t burned down yet.
Seriously, though, [...]
