So… while my kick-ass husband took care of ALL FOUR of our sweet lil’uns this weekend, I flew East.
While visiting here a few months ago, Katey and I had conspired to have a baby shower for our dear friend Kristina and surprise her with a visit from me. Katey went home to work on shower preparations, while I checked on flights to D.C. and somehow duped Dan into letting me go.
It was WONDERFUL. I so miss my friends. I mean, I have some acquaintences here. And you couldn’t ask for better neighbors. But I don’t have any good friends yet. You know – the kind you laugh with until you cry. The kind that tell you when you are a perfect contestant for “What Not To Wear.” The kind you can go shopping with and actually come home happy. The kind you don’t hesitate to call when your husband is on a plane and your unborn baby doesn’t follow protocol.
I flew in on Friday and was able to spend time with the Edwards family before the shower and big surprise on Saturday. Thanks to Katey (and Mini-Quiche King Jeremy), the shower went off without a hitch. It was a tropical theme, and Katey’s backyard was perfect – lots of trees and flowers – and she decorated it beautifully.
Once Kristina and a few guests had arrived, I walked out to greet them. Kristina did a double take, I hugged her, and she cried. It was wonderful.
Kristina looks absolutely beautiful carrying my unborn Godchild. You’d never know she’s pregnant except for the basketball she carries in the front and the smile that never leaves her face. We added to her beauty with a coconut bra and a grass skirt to fit with the theme and she accepted them both with grace.
On Saturday night, the DeLeeuws had us over for pizza and beer and we kept the kids up and talked late into the evening. I had a blast, and although I was enjoying a reprieve from my responsibilities, I found myself wishing Dan and the kids were there. It would have been like old times. As it was, I took up the slack and represented the family.
On Sunday we all met for a last meal together. I was happy to be going home to my family, but so sad to be leaving my friends. We’ll most likely never live in the same place again, which makes me so sad. This new Goddaughter of mine will have an absentee Godmother and Father, just like our beautiful Goddaughter in Tennessee. Thank goodness for the internet, road trips and plane tickets!
So, thank you, Katey (and family) and Kristina (and family) for having me in D.C. I don’t know when we’ll see each other again, but I sure hope it’s soon!
