A Trip Out of the House

January 30th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Parenting

Today was a half day for Jack at school, which means no school at all for Maria.  So, basically everyone has been home all or most of the day.  Yay!  Even Dan was around for most of the morning, as he and I took everyone to Jack’s school mass this morning.  (Yes.  We are insane).

When Dan left for work, I decided it was the perfect time to load everyone up for a trip to our favorite store:  The Home Depot.  Wailing and gnashing of teeth ensued.  Tears of frustration at having to go sockless (because a certain 4-year-old goes through so many pair of socks a day there are none clean at the moment).  Don’t ask.  Lots of yelling on my part because a) sockless child was being unreasonable; b) oldest child was complaining LOUDLY about always having to go everywhere; and c) because I’m always yelling at the little darlings as we attempt to leave the house as a group for any purpose.

I was finally able to get everyone out of the house and stuffed into the van.  We were off.  (To give you an indication of how often we go to The Home Depot, my 2-year-old can tell me how to get there.)  I needed only a few things and I knew were they were for the most part.  As we headed into the store, I had two kids in the cart and two hanging off.  Not a lot of room for supplies, but I didn’t need anything big.

Although I was in the store for less than 15 minutes, this did not keep Jack and Maria from sword fighting with the Liquid Nails tubes, nor was anyone able to keep their voices below loud-speaker volume, nor could Jack resist playing with a lumber cart, which resulted him in getting trapped somehow.

After Jack disentangled himself, we made it through the Self Check, but just barely before Jack could scan an item on his own Self Check register.

We topped off our trip with a very exciting ride through the automatic car wash and arrived home with everyone in tact.

I think I’m going to have to break out the Wii for the kids this weekend.  Clearly they have energy to burn and the cold weather is keeping them from doing so.  While they’re on the Wii, I think I’m going to drink a bottle of wine.

Probably good I wasn’t there. I’d have played with the items too. :-)
