A Squirrelly Halloween

In anticipation of Halloween, a few weeks ago Dan bought a pumpkin and set it out on our little front stoop.  I figured over the following week or so we’d buy a few more and then a few days before Halloween we’d have a carving party with the kids.  Carving pumpkins was always a big part of Halloween for us growing up.  It’s messy, but it’s fun, and with all the new tools out it’s pretty easy now.

After dropping the kids at school one morning, as I walked up the steps to Casa Amarilla, I noticed that there was a little notch in the side of our pumpkin.  I looked a little closer.  It looked like two big teeth were responsible for the notch!  Of course, I could have been mistaken.  The kids could have hit it with something.  Or, maybe one of them decided to try a bite.  Oh, well.  It was a small defect and it could be taken care of when we did our carving.

Another day passed and I found a bigger chunk missing from our pumpkin!  I couldn’t believe it!  As I glanced around the yard, I noticed the squirrels frolicking in the yard.  I also noticed one particularly FAT squirrel.  He must have been the culprit!

Well, I guess that squirrel went off and told all his friends that some newbies were in town who didn’t know they needed to protect their pumpkins.  Not only was our pumpkin completely decimated – inside and out – but the squirrels had no fear.  We could practically share the stoop with them while they chowed down right in front of us!
